William James Millar Mackenzie was born on 8 April 1909 , only son of L M Mackenzie, WS, Edinburgh. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Balliol College, Oxford, England and the University of Edinburgh. He was a distinguished student at Oxford, gaining 1st Classes in Classical Moderations and Litterae Humanitores; winning the Craven Scholarship ( 1928 ) and the Ireland Scholarship ( 1929 ); and sharing the Jenkyns Exhibition in Classics ( 1931 ).
